Bhubaneswar: City police on Tuesday arrested a man on charges of stealing cash and jewellery from the residence of senior IAS officer Bishnupada Sethi on May 1. The accused was identified as Rabindra Naik (35) alias Gobara, a resident of Kedarpalli slum here.
“During investigation and verification of CCTV footage, we found the involvement of Naik in the crime. He is a habitual burglar. He was previously arrested in two theft cases in the Lingaraj police area and one in the Airfield area here,” said an officer of the Capital police station.
In the early hours of May 1, Naik scaled the rear boundary wall of Sethi’s quarters located in front of police commissioner S Dev Datta Singh’s residence in the posh Forest Park locality, making off with a diamond ring and cash.
According to the complaint lodged by Sethi’s wife, Vaishali, at the Capital police station, the incident took place between 12.30 am and 9 am. Her FIR reported the theft of a handbag containing cash, two gold earrings, and a diamond ring. However, police have managed to recover only a few hundred rupees from Naik.
